the story

While the world is faced with the breakout of war and a lingering global pandemic, the climate crisis continues to worsen. In the Canadian Rockies, the ‘heat dome’ that marked the 2021 summer season has left glaciers in rough shape. Far more than just a tourist attraction, these glaciers are a primary freshwater source feeding our rivers and lakes—and they are receding faster than ever.

Each year, Girls on Ice Canada leads expeditions that introduce young women to glaciers by interweaving science, art, and adventure. The program is designed to support scientific knowledge, encourage artistic expression, and build confidence as well as long-lasting relationships. This short film follows an expedition to Rogers Pass & Illecillewaet Glacier to document a group of young women as they learn to nagivate glacial terrain, observe visible signs of climate change, understand connections between organisms and landscapes, and reflect on their own interactions with the mountains through art.

In addition to a short film, this project will also produce marketing and promotional material to support Girls on Ice Canada and their programs.
