the story
My mom is a pop star.
An award-winning Filipino popstar with over 20 studio albums.
When Joey Albert was my age, she sold out stadiums. Her face plastered billboards over Manila. She starred in TV shows, commercials, and films along with her music but left it all behind to raise her daughters in Canada. Today, she’s a daycare teacher and a three-time cancer survivor. Oh, and she still fills concert halls with fans who sing along to her hit songs.
This documentary explores the highs and lows of Joey Albert’s music career, three battles with cancer, and journey reinventing her life in Canada. Told intimately through her daughter’s eyes with footage shot at home and on tour, it investigates our family history, the meaning of legacy, and the power of music. While her story is unique, in many ways it is also one that many women, Filipinos, and immigrants share.
